What to Expect When Commissioning an Abstract Portrait

Updated: 2 days ago

Commissioning an abstract portrait is not a one-day transaction — it’s a short creative journey we take together. Here’s what the process looks like, step by step, so you know exactly what to expect and when.

1. Booking & Deposit

Once we agree to work together, I’ll send a simple agreement and a link to submit your deposit. This reserves your spot in my schedule and allows me to begin preparing for your portrait experience.

Nothing begins until the deposit is received — this protects both of us and ensures the time and attention your portrait deserves.

2. The Conversation

Every portrait begins with a recorded conversation. This can be with one person, a couple, a family or group.

There’s no performance required — just presence. I listen for tone, rhythm, emotional color, and the light that comes through as you speak. This conversation becomes the foundation of the artwork.

You’ll receive a lightly edited digital copy of the audio from this session as part of the process.

3. Creation Period (Up to 40 Days)

After our conversation, I begin painting.

Each piece is created by hand in oil pastel, one at a time. I work intuitively, letting what I hear guide color, movement, and composition. Because of the nature of this medium and my style, revisions are minimal and handled with care and discretion.

Your portraits will be completed within 40 days of our interview.

4. First Look

Once all pieces are finished, I’ll send you photographs of the completed paintings. This is your first glimpse of how your story translated into color and form.

At this stage, the artwork itself is complete.

5. Framing, Shipping & Final Payment

After you’ve seen the finished work, I’ll frame the pieces, carefully package them, and calculate the final shipping cost (including insurance and tracking).

You’ll receive a final payment link once everything is ready. Final payment is due before shipment.

6. Delivery

Once final payment is received, your artwork ships within five business days. You’ll receive tracking information so you know exactly when your portraits are on their way home to you.

A Gentle Note on Trust

Abstract portraiture asks for a bit of trust — not just in me, but in the process. My role is to listen deeply and translate what I hear into something visual, lasting, and honest.

My promise is care, presence, and integrity at every step.

If this process resonates with you, the next step is to complete a short intake form. It gives me the context I need to plan your portrait thoughtfully and ensures we’re aligned before moving forward. Once submitted, I’ll follow up with availability and next steps.
